After living with his religiously strict grandmother since birth, a 10 year old boy and his older brother move to New York City in 1958 to live with their famous mother, singer Dinah Washington.  He witnesses her juggling the pressures of the music industry, motherhood and her fifth marriage as she is introduced to prescription pills to manage.
